Read at least 3 – 4 different articles or eBook chapters on the genocide you select. Based on your research, consider the following questions as jumping-off points for getting started on your paper: What ideas, beliefs, attitudes, events, or other factors helped to set the stage for this genocide? What were its long-term causes? How was this genocide carried out? What it relatively spontaneous or was it planned? We learned that historical interpretations of the Holocaust fall into two groups

We learned that historical interpretations of the Holocaust fall into two groups: Intentionalist and Functionalist. Intentionalists, as the name implies, focus very heavily on the ideas and intentions of Hitler and other Germans. They see the Holocaust as a direct outgrowth of these ideas—either through the unfolding of some Hitlerian master plan or as the unavoidable outcome of a murderous “eliminationist antisemitism” that was deeply rooted in German society and culture. Functionalists, on the other hand, argue that a wide variety of social and political factors shaped the Holocaust. Rather than seeing a direct line between Hitler’s ideas and/or German antisemitism and the death camps, these scholars emphasize the chaotic and improvised nature of much of Nazi policy. One scholar has described this process as the “twisted road to Auschwitz.” Many scholars today fall somewhere between these extremes, recognizing some value in both perspectives. For example, Doris Bergen and Jeffrey Herf describe themselves as “modified Intentionalists.” Christopher Browning and Ian Kershaw have been described as a “moderate Functionalists.” Yet all four of these scholars would recognize elements in both perspectives that help us to understand the Holocaust more fully. For your midterm essay, review the materials from the first four weeks of class, and answer all of the following questions in ONE 3-4 page (800-1000 word) essay.
