Interview Analysis
You will conduct two interviews with practicing professionals in the field of law enforcement. These individuals may occupy positions in federal, state, county, or municipal police agencies, probation, parole, public defenders, judges, or prosecutors’ offices.
It is preferable that you conduct the interviews in person, but telephone interviews will be acceptable if in-person interviews cannot be arranged.
Focus on the following questions in your interviews:
Why are ethics and character so important in the field of law enforcement?
Do the interviewees feel that police are more ethical today or were more ethical 10 years ago?
Why do police officers become involved in misconduct?
Do the interviewees feel that there is enough training offered in ethics at the police academy level? If not, why is that?
Do the interviewees believe that law enforcement agencies are doing enough to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in their recruitment, hiring, and procedural practices?
Should ethics training be offered as an ongoing process for law enforcement officers?
Do the interviewees feel that education and/or training in ethics would reduce incidents of police corruption?
Report the results of these interviews in a paper that answers the proposed questions. Apply to your paper information that has been read and discussed in class on various ethical issues to form a synthesis of practical law enforcement ideologies. Be sure to discuss with the interviewees at least four contemporary ethical issues that they are dealing with as criminal justice practitioners. Finally, offer your own insights on the perspectives of the individuals you interviewed and materials covered in the text readings and Seminar discussions.

View The Court System – Evidence and Procedure in preparation for the assignment in this unit.
This is a media simulation that includes all of the players from the criminal justice system from the time the crime is committed through the trial. You will need to study the case presented, because your assignment is to decide the verdict and write about the arguments and evidence that supports your decision. You can listen to the narration of each character, or there is a transcript for you to download and read.
Assignment Overview
Shows such as Law and Order SVU have glorified the roles of prosecuting and defending attorneys, the judge, the bailiff, and the jury, and the popularity of these types of shows have brought these courtroom participants into the living rooms of everyday Americans on a weekly or even daily basis. All these roles are links in the chain to make the whole system function smoothly. Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be a professional courtroom participant?

Discussion Thread: Ethics in Institutional Corrections ETHICAL ISSUES IN INSTITU

Discussion Thread: Ethics in Institutional Corrections
Employment in a correctional facility is one of the most common careers for graduates with a criminal justice degree. That this is true is, of course, no surprise, given the growth of the number of incarcerated individuals in the U.S. over the past few decades. As your readings for today point out, work in a correctional facility is rife with ethical dilemmas.
Correctional officers are tasked with ensuring security and enforcing rules and regulations in institutions that are overcrowded, underfunded, and dangerous. Not only are correctional officers expected to manage inmates who are working under strained conditions for little to no compensation, they are are routinely expected to implement specific punishments (e.g. solitary confinement) that many consider unethical.
When considering ethics and professionalism in correctional institutions, it is especially important that you interrogate your own beliefs about what should happen to the incarcerated: What type of treatment do these individuals deserve? What are the goals of institutional corrections? What is the role of the correctional officer in the life of the organization and the day-to-day existence of the incarcerated? Do you have any ethical qualms with working in an institution that engages in the types of activities common in correctional facilities?
It is particularly important that you consider your answers to these questions because there is a strong chance that you will, indeed, work in a correctional facility at some point in your criminal justice career. This week we will consider the place of ethical action in the correctional institution.
IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING THIS WEEK’S CONTENT: The focus this week–both the subject and the course materials– include descriptions and depictions of violence and physical pain in correctional settings. As you engage this week, please be aware that this material contains sensitive content.
