Research Article Summary

For this assignment, you need to choose a peer-reviewed applied linguistics research article on a topic of your choice. You will read this article carefully and then write a one-page summary of this article following this template:
TEMPLATE.docx
The audience for your summary is a reader with a non-specialist background. Your summary should help a reader who does not have a background applied linguistics understand the key information from your research article.
When you write your summary, you must include the same sections (with section headings) as the template:
• Citation for the original article
• Title of your summary
• What this research was about and why it is important
• What the researchers did
• What the researchers found
• Things to consider
You may consult the two example summaries as models for writing your own summary:

OASIS Example_Andringa et al_2011.pdf Download OASIS Example_Andringa et al_2011.pdf
When you submit your assignment, please submit BOTH your summary (in a Word or PDF document) and the research article you summarized (in a PDF document).

Reading Questions

Unfortunately, I was only able to copy and past one chapter (Schmitt & Rodgers 13).
The questions pertain to chapters of the following two books:
Perry, F. L., Jr. (2017). Research in applied linguistics: Becoming a discerning consumer (3rd
ed.). Routledge.

Research Essay Requirement – Critical Analysis
Answer the following question. (Total 100 marks)
Question
This is a mini-research project which appraises the issues surrounding sociolinguistic approaches to language and power – specifically, critical sociolinguistics.
Critical sociolinguistics aims to contribute to addressing social inequities through changes in the way we speak or use language in general. In other words, as an approach to the study of social discourse, it assumes that language is implicated in social inequalities, so its main concern is to find out how this is so and what can be done to change it for the betterment of society.
Your task:
Select a context (e.g. home, school, office, hospital, courtroom, shop) which will enable you to carry out a critical sociolinguistic observation of power differentials at play.
Based on actual data examples in your chosen context, examine and critique the issue of language variation and use. Data sources may include but not be limited to:
• Written and spoken media
• Electronic communication
• Cross-cultural/cross-ethnic communication
In your critique, discuss some of the factors affecting language and power. You may wish to consider the following variables:
• social distance between the speaker and the addressee
• relative power of one over the other
• degree of imposition associated with the interaction (in terms of, for example, goods and services required);
• relative status of language or dialect, code-switching
• age, gender and class
• politeness markers such as pronoun choice
• power and resistance, signs of struggle
• register and style
• use of anti-language
Marks
Marking will be holistic. The following percentage breakdown only indicates the relative importance of the various components.
a. A brief discussion of the context, i.e. the issue of language variation and use in the selected setting (20 %)
b. A critical discussion of relevant factors that affect language variation and use, with clear examples from your data (60 %)
c. Quality of research and writing (20 %)

Important Note (PLEASE READ)
I have decided to use my all-time favourite movie, Matilda (1996), to critically analyse the language and power used in this film. My Research Critical Analysis Essay will also look at child’s rights, origins, and development regarding young people and children. As my media theme source is analysed, I will provide a debate or argument about it. I will examine the policies related to children’s rights in care (UNICEF’s Convention on the Rights of the Child) and critically analyse the media source alongside some sociolinguistics and early childhood theories. The paper should consider how these ideas play out from the early childhood teacher’s perspective at the present world. The paper will be positive and inspirational. My media source Matilda will be looking at power and powerlessness and the notion of advocacy. At the end of the essay, I will summarise and pull together all the arguments.
Matilda’s (1996) movie in a nutshell: Sweet and bright little Matilda Wormwood, a child of wondrous intelligence, is different from the rest of her family. After being misunderstood by everyone and ignored at home, she escapes into a world of reading, honing her skills, and exercising her mind so much that she develops telekinetic abilities.
Life lesson learnt I from the film Matilda (Please add the following points to support any theoriest)
Reading is good for the soul

As she struggles to understand or be understood by her own family, Matilda teaches us that reading can provide an escape. A great quote from the book says, “The books transported her into new worlds and introduced her to amazing people who lived exciting lives.”
The strength to stand up for yourself
Matilda is a show that will give you the courage to stand up for yourself, no matter what kind of abuse you are subjected to. She endures verbal abuse at home before entering a world of verbal and physical abuse at school.
‘If it’s not right, you have to put it right.’
Matilda shows us that if you ‘sit around and let them get on top, you won’t change a thing.
Teachers can either inspire or intimidate

Never listen to those who say anything like, “I’m smart, you’re dumb. I’m big, you’re little. I’m right you’re wrong!”

Dance like nobody is watching!

a‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ 15-minute presentation on your project, basically in the same format as the report, but everything very, very much briefer: intro, key literature framework, one aspect of your findings, discussion …etc. The expectation is that you will have a PowerPoint, or equivalent, set of visual aids to present your material, and that you will talk alongside that set of slides to explain them further. It is of course preferable that you would be able to present this in real time, either in person or online, and if so, we need to use a platform that allows you to show your face and share your screen at the same time, such as Zoom. If that is not possible, you can record your presentation using a platfrom such as Mediasite which agains brings face, voice and slides together. If you need help with this, let your supervisor know. The organisation of the presentation should follow the same form‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍at as the Research Report itself. So it should include: an introduction a brief account at some key literature methodology, with an indication of the research design, implementation and analysis key findings discussion conclusion I have mentioned that I am an Arabic student as well and what this report present and helps me to discover and support me in what Why I choose this topic to whom my research concern and to whom I would deliver and who will help what I expect from this research and just focus on the important point and show my enthusiastic to discover and find the challenges of the arabic learners as I said because I have the same experience. as a learner and a teacher ( in positive way pls ) I will attach slide example to see I need you to write this information for me to know exactly what I will present then you will use the slides to show the information‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍.

This is such a compelling case. It has moved us all over the last couple of years so I can understand your choosing this case. If you can focus on the communication between the police and Floyd in your revision to meet the requirements of the assignment…we are seeking to analyze the linguistic evidence in the case and here we have the pleas of Floyd and the responses (either in action or words of the police). We have to show that it was not reasonable or rational for the officers to ignore those pleas or to use force. If there were violations of the constitutional rights you mentioned, how were these rights violated … under the courts’ interpretation of the law. Review my comments, revise, and resubmit. Notice that there are 4 additional points in the rubric for revision.

I‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌ want a complete revision to the attached file. Below are the comments I have received from different supervisors on this file, please take them into consideration while revising the paper.
” I find your proposal a bit confusing and disjointed in its focus. It’s not clear to me that you understand what corpus-based methods are. You also mention looking at clusters towards the end, but this is not justified early on in‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌ your review and it’s not clear what findings you expect and what these will contribute. The analyses are underspecified. Your research questions need to be theoretically modified and then your methodology needs to be robust.”
Note: If you feel that this proposal topic is not going to be enough to guarantee me a position in a P.h.D program even after being revised, please inform me in advance so we can discuss other to‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌pics.

There will be a final paper due at the end of our course, to be submitted via Blackboard (using
Turn It In, which will check for plagiarism). This paper is a very open ended chance for you to
explore a topic related to human language that interests you. It must be at least 8 pages, double
spaced, with 1 inch margins with Times New Roman font, and in APA format. You should have
at least 3 respectable sources for your research (i.e., not Wikipedia! However, Wikipedia is a great
way to find sources/references). You will be required to choose your paper topic by July 5th. (The
July 5th blog post will be about your topic and why you chose it.) Be sure that all of your sources
are properly cited (see section below on Academic Integrity); papers that contain plagiarism
will receive a grade of 0. You may re-upload your paper to Turn It In on Blackboard as
many times as you like before the due date to ensure that you are not plagiarizing (even
accidentally!).
