The topic is: Video Games
To be persuasive in your revisionist profile paper, you’ll need to start by introducing your reader not just to your topic, but to the conventional wisdom surrounding that thing. And, since you’ll be in some way arguing against the conventional opinion about that thing, you’ll first need to establish what that common or accepted wisdom is. Only when you have established (for yourself and for your reader) precisely the conventional wisdom about your topic will you be able to effectively argue from another, more interesting angle.
This relatively short Conventional Wisdom assignment asks you to write that portion of your paper—the introductory information that 1) introduces your reader to the thing, and more importantly, 2) establishes clearly its conventional wisdom.
Of those two components, the second will constitute the bulk of the assignment. Explain and interpret the conventional wisdom about your topic from your own viewpoint, from the mass media, from written studies and articles. What do most people think about it? What are the common attitudes and opinions about the thing? With what terms, names, or contexts is this thing generally associated? Be careful not to mistake biographical/background information for conventional wisdom.
Remember that neither this nor your final essay should be a Wikipedia entry about your thing.Since you unlikely to be an expert on your topic, I will expect you to incorporate some research into this Conventional Wisdom write-up. Ideally, you will be able to integrate a polished draft of this assignment into your final paper. Enjoy!
